There has been a lot of action in the media related to the prospect of an Actual Innocence Commission in Florida that would study the cases of known wrongful convictions and make recommendations for policy reforms that would help prevent wrongful convictions in the future. As you may recall, the budget with the appropriation for the Innocence Commission is sitting on Gov. Crist’s desk. Well, he is getting some advice from Florida’s major newspapers:
- Florida Needs an Innocence Commission (St. Pete Times)
- Lawmakers Want Commission to Prevent Wrongful Convictions (Central Florida News 13) (With Video Here)
- Innocence Now (Tallahassee Democrat)
- Getting to the Bottom of Justice System Failures (OpEd in St. Pete Times by former IPF student Chelsea Enright)
Again, we will just wait and see what the Governor does but the pressure is clearly on for the creation of the Commission.

Our son was just convicted of premeditated murder on June 10, 2010. This took place in Gulf County Florida and the jury deliberated for approx 1 to 1 & 1/2 hours. What has shaken us to the core is the fact that there is no evidence, no DNA, and believe me, they took 30 hairs from his scalp, underarms, and legs. Saliva and blood was given – he volunteered for a voice stress anilyzer. Everything he could do to prove his innocence but it was all circumstantial evidence and jailhouse informants, drug dealers, testified against him….we are appealing this but I never in my life thought our justice system would give a person a life sentence on “hearsay”….???? What happened to proof in our court system??
