Not sure how I missed this article this morning. The Democrat ran an editorial decrying the Victims of Wrongful Incarceration statute’s ‘clean hands’ provision and asked that the state representatives from Brevard county step forward with a claims bill for Bill Dillon. Dillon is unable to claim the $1.35 million he is otherwise entitled to because the statute bars compensating anyone with a prior felony. His recourse now is to have a state legislator sponsor an ad hoc bill on his behalf. Meanwhile, Dillon works at an auto-parts store struggling to make ends meet.
That a mistake in his youth should haunt Dillon after all he has suffered only worsens the miscarriage of injustice and leaves him trying to find a sponsor in the Legislature to write a special claims bill for the 2010 session.
The cadre of Brevard county representatives includes Mike Haridopolos, who introduced the claims bill that got Wilton Dedge compensated. Kudos to Sen. Haridopolos for doing the right thing back then. Let’s hope that he and his brethren do it again, and do it soon.
