Steppin’ Out – April 5, 2013
An Evening of Celebration, Dinner & Awards
With Men Who Spent Decades in Prison for Crimes They Did Not Commit
6:00 p.m. – Cocktails
7:00 – 9:00 p.m. – Dinner & Program
Four Seasons Hotel
1435 Brickell Avenue, Miami, FL
The theme for this year is Wrongful Convictions: A Family Matter. We recognize the reality that wrongful convictions impact more than just those who were sent to prison. Not surprising, it can be devastating for the family – losing their son, brother or dad to a wrongful conviction, often for decades.
We will begin the evening with cocktails with the exonerees, special guests and award recipients followed by dinner and the program. Throughout the evening we will highlight the inspiring stories of the 13 Florida DNA exonerees, pay tribute to their families, and present the Frank Lee Smith Innocence Award to Ms. Betty Anne Waters, whose true story inspired the movie Conviction. You’ll hear from Ms. Waters how her brother’s wrongful conviction significantly altered her life. Watch the movie trailer here.
We are privileged to have William Michael Dillon, Florida DNA exoneree and recording artist, with us for the evening. He will perform several original songs that were written during his wrongful imprisonment.
There will be a silent auction at the celebration. In addition, we are hosting an on-line auction right now that includes several unique travel packages and experiences. The items in the on-line auction are open for pre-bidding and will close at the live auction on April 5, 2013. You have until 6:00 pm on April 3, 2013 to place your maximum bid – so you can still be a winner even if you are not in attendance.
General Public: $200 (Cocktails, dinner and awards program)
Judges, Public Interest Attorneys & Students: $150 (Cocktails, dinner and awards program)
All proceeds from Steppin’ Out provide critical money for our litigation efforts. In addition to the staff attorneys, the funding covers document collection and review, investigation, and DNA testing. Our goal is to raise $100,000.
Several Florida DNA exonerees will be present throughout the evening. Florida has freed 13 men who collectively spent 259 years in prison for crimes that DNA testing proved they did not commit. Their strength and fortitude is amazing. They do struggle with what happened to them, but their forgiveness and lack of anger is hard to comprehend.
Each exoneree is grateful beyond words for the return of their liberty and the opportunities they have been afforded. Your sponsorship will make life-changing opportunities available to others who are currently wrongfully imprisoned in Florida. Click here to learn more about sponsorship opportunities.
