Steppin’ Out 2013

The celebration of IPF’s 10th anniversary began with cocktails with the exonerees, special guests and award recipients followed by dinner and the program. Throughout the evening we heard the inspiring stories of the Florida DNA exonerees and the impact their wrongful conviction had on them and their families. The Florida Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers was honored with the Chairman’s Award for the organization’s and members’ moral and financial support of IPF.

The Frank Lee Smith Innocence Award was presented to Ms. Betty Anne Waters, whose life inspired the movie Conviction. Ms. Waters spoke emotionally about her brother Kenny’s wrongful conviction and its impact on the entire family. Her story and years of dedication to free her brother were met with a standing ovation. A special performance by Exoneree William Michael Dillon captivated the crowd, which led to an encore performance.

We thank everyone, especially our sponsors, who attended and made this event such a success. The evening raised nearly $40,000, which will support our litigation efforts on behalf of wrongfully convicted people in Florida prisons.
